Sutureless techniques have been used for over a decade by eye physicians. Cataract surgeons have incorporated well-architected incisions that were constructed to "self-seal." Using no-stitch incisions, benefits the patient by allowing for fewer complications and quicker recovery.
Self-sealing incisions used with Vitrectomy (surgical removal of the vitreous, the gel-like substance that fills the center of the eye), has been used for years to clear blood and debris from the eye or to alleviate traction on the retina. The tiny incisions, known as sclerotomies, are made on the "white" of the eye. Because of the way the incision is constructed, it seals naturally from the eye's internal pressure.
Retina Consultants have performed thousands of self-sealing sutureless surgeries.
